Some curiosities

In Buddhism it is considered one of the seven treasures and equated with wisdom. The word “emerald” comes from the Latin smaragdus, from the Greek σμάραγδος (smàragdos), but its original source is izmargad, a Semitic term, or maragata, a Sanskrit term, which literally means “green stone”.

The oldest deposits are the Egyptian ones, near the Red Sea coast in Upper Egypt south of Kosseir. In Egypt the emerald mines, which were probably already active around 3500 BC, were only rediscovered in 1816 by the French mineralogist Frédéric Cailliaud. Those of the Urals were only discovered in 1830 and are located near Ekaterinburg, where they are found in the Mycascists together with phenacite and aquamarine, as well as in the Egyptian emplacement. The deposits of South America were known in the 1500’s: the main, and still productive, deposits are those of Colombia (the famous “Muzo” mine) and Brazil in the states of Goias and Minas Gerais. The largest mine in the world is currently that of Santa Terezina in Goias where they are mined in the open air.

The Habachtal crystals in Austria have been famous in Europe since the Middle Ages. In Italy excellent cutting samples up to 5 cm in size were found in the seventies on some abandoned boulders at the Domodossola station. Later a small deposit was found, now exhausted, near Pizzo Marcio.
