Omega Speedmaster Reduced Vintage Watch

The History of Omega Watches

In 1848, Louis Brandt opened an assembly workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds. On his death in 1889, his two sons Louis-Paul and Caesar opened an industrial factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which became the first Swiss watch manufacturer in 1900 and official timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932 (except for a few editions).

Its movements (in technical jargon called “calibres”) evolved over time, using purely mechanical movements until around 1975 and then introducing electronic quartz movements. Among the famous families of movements, the 30 with mechanical winding produced in its variants in the period 1939-1963, the 470 (25mm) / 470 (27mm) family produced in the period 1955-1960 and evolved into the 500 series, with automatic bezel movements some of them with date display and the 550/560 series immediately following from which the 700 series calibres were also derived. The last automatic mechanical movements before the electronic era were those of the 1000/1010/1020 family.

The brand has also become famous for NASA’s decision to use the “Speedmaster” chronograph for all space missions since the 1960s, including the moon landing. The back of the “Speedmaster” is engraved with the words “The first watch worn on the Moon” and “Flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions” (recognised by NASA as suitable for flight on all manned space missions).

In the latest films (from the 1990s onwards) agent 007, James Bond, always wears an Omega Seamaster watch on his wrist. Another very famous line of the house, evolved over time, was the Constellation. These three lines have over time shared the various calibres in production with a variety of dials and cases generating a remarkable variety of pieces. For example you can find watches called Seamaster De Ville, with various calibres and types of cases. Omega is slowly introducing, on almost all its watches, the “Co-Axial” escapement, designed by George Daniels.
